Please don’t try to kill your desires. You only want to kill something that you think is your enemy. In this case, if you are trying to kill your desires, you have made the desire your enemy. But where is the desire coming from? It’s coming from you. Therefore, in a deeper sense, you have made yourself your own enemy. You are fighting with yourself by fighting with your desires. It is a part of you. It doesn’t come from the outside.
Instead of trying to kill it, you can learn to transcend it. You can go beyond your desire. Once you get a deep understanding of your desires and you see the stupidity of them, your desires dissolve. Just notice: how many things do you do that you know are stupid? You don’t really have to kill or fight or control yourself from doing these things. You just don’t do them because they don’t make sense to you. This is transcendence. You have gone beyond the desire.
That’s how you respond to a desire. Not by fighting it, but by understanding it. And understanding can only happen when you look at it without any condemnation or judgment. It is not your enemy. We cannot understand our enemy because we cannot look at them without our anger, judgment, and condemnation. Similarly, as long as you look at your desires as your enemy, you will not be able to understand them and thus not be able to transcend them. Just look at your desires with love and compassion. That’s all that is required. Remember, they are a part of you. :)
